DETAILED SYLLABUS FOR THE POST OF LECTURER IN VIOLIN IN COLLEGIATE EDUCATION (MUSIC COLLEGES)

MODULE 1: CONCERT PLATFORMS AND INSTITUITIONS (2 MARKS)

Music Sabhas in Chennai, Any 2 awards instituted by Madras Music Academy, Kalakshetra (Chennai), Institutions or Colleges propagating Carnatic Music in South India.

MODULE 2: VIOLIN TRINITY – T N KRISHNAN, M S GOPALAKRISHNAN, LALGUDI G JAYARAMAN (3 MARKS)

Awards and Honors received by Prof: T N Krishnan, Lineage and Training of M S Gopalakrishnan, Compositions of Lalgudi G Jayaraman, Mysore Chowdaiah and his seven stringed Violin.

MODULE 3: ORIGIN AND EVOLUTION OF VIOLIN (5 MARKS)

Ancient Violin makers, Parts of Bow, Materials used for the construction of Violin, Violin Family, Electrification in Violin – Advantages and Disadvantages.

MODULE 4: MELA & RHYTHM (5 MARKS)

Tani – Avartanam, Instruments in a Laya Vinyasam,, Shodasha Swaras, Bhootha Sankhya, Katapayadi Formula.

MODULE 5: NOTATION AND MUSICAL FACTS (8 MARKS)

Staff Notation, Musical appreciation of a kriti of Musical Trinity, Musical Stone Pillars, Acoustics of an ideal Concert Hall.

MODULE 6: RAGA (10 MARKS)

Raga classification – Vakra, Varjya, Janya, Sampoorna, Upanga, Bhashanga, Panchamantya, Daivatantya and Nishdantya. Raga Lakshnas – Atana, Begada, Latangi, Kedaragoula, Neelambari, Vachaspathi, Ranjani & Hamirkalyani. Time  theory of Ragas.

MODULE 7: TALA (10 MARKS)

Tala Dasa Pranas, 108 Talas, Marga and Desi Talas, Chappu Tala and its Varieties, Music and Mathematics.

MODULE 8: MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS (10 MARKS)

Classification of Stringed, Wind and Percussion, Structure and playing posture of Violin in Carnatic style, Hindustani Instruments – Sitar & Sarod, Art of Violin accompaniment to any vocal or instrumental concert.

MODULE 9: REGIONAL MUSIC (10 MARKS)

Folk music of Kerala, Music in Kathakali and the Ragas used, Panchavadya and Thayambaka, Sopana Sangitam – Origin and Evolution.

MODULE 10: MUSICAL FORMS BOTH IN CARNATIC & HINDUSTANI (10 MARKS)

Kathakalakshepam, Tiruvasagam, Kavadi Chinthu, Tirupugazh, Dhrupad, Khayal & Thumri, Thaats.

Module 11: HISTORY OF INDIAN MUSIC (12 MARKS)

Lakshana Grandhas – Brihhadesi, Sangeeta Chandrika, Chathurdandi Prakasika & Sangeeta Kalpadrumam, Vedic Music – Sama Gana and its Characteristics, Modal shift of tonic, Dashavidha Gamakas, Seats of Music – Tanjavur, Tirupati, Madras & Trivandrum, Gurukula System.

MODULE 12: MUSICAL TRINITY AND THEIR CONTEMPORARIES (15 MARKS)

Group kritis handled by Trinity, Life sketch – Pattanam Subramanya Iyer, Gopalakrishna Bharathi & Muthaiah Bhagavathar, Kerala Composers – M D Ramanathan, Irayimman Tampi & Kuttikunju Thankachi.
